Another Walk-Off Ends Tar Heels' Season
Vance Honeycutt's homer in the 10th inning gives ECU a 3-2 win
Pirates advance to super regionals, will face Texas
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Vance Honeycutt hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give East Carolina a 3-2 win over North Carolina in the Greenville Super Regional on Sunday night.
The Pirates (47-18) advance to the College World Series for the first time since 2016. They will face Texas (44-19) in the first round of the double-elimination tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday.
Honeycutt's home run came on a 2-2 pitch from UNC reliever Gage Gillian (1-2). It was Honeycutt's sixth home run of the season.
The Tar Heels (41-25) had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th, but Aaron Sabato flew out to left field with two runners on.
UNC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Mikey Madej. ECU tied the game in the fourth on a RBI single by Jacob Starling.
The Pirates took the lead in the fifth on a RBI single by Josh Moylan, but the Tar Heels tied the game again in the seventh on a RBI single by Tomas Frick.
ECU starter Gavin Williams allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Reliever Jake Kuchmaner (6-1) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.
UNC starter Max Carlson allowed one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Caden O'Brien allowed one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings.
