The Mysterious and Tragic Death of Payne Stewart

A Plane Crash Leaves Questions Unanswered

Unconsciousness and Death

On October 25, 1999, PGA golfer Payne Stewart, his agent, and former Alabama football quarterback Robert Fraley were killed in a Learjet crash. The plane was traveling from Orlando, Florida, to Texas for the year-ending tournament, The Tour. The cause of the crash remains a mystery, but investigators believe that all four passengers were unconscious for hours before the plane crashed.

The plane crashed at 12:13 p.m. local time in a quiet pasture on Hoffmans cattle farm. Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low and erratically before it crashed. The impact of the crash was so severe that the plane was completely destroyed. The bodies of the four passengers were found inside the wreckage.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigated the crash and determined that the probable cause was "a loss of control of the airplane for undetermined reasons." The NTSB also found that the plane was not equipped with a flight data recorder or a cockpit voice recorder, which could have provided valuable information about the events leading up to the crash.

The death of Payne Stewart was a tragic loss for the world of golf. Stewart was one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour and was known for his charismatic personality and his aggressive style of play. He had won 11 PGA Tour events, including the 1991 U.S. Open and the 1999 PGA Championship. Stewart's death left a void in the golf world that has never been filled.
